The Color of Friendship (2000)

Inspired by actual events comes this Emmy Award-winning movie about two girls from different worlds who learn the ultimate lesson about tolerance and friendship. When African-American Congressman Ron Dellums and his daughter Piper (Shadia Simmons, ZENON: THE ZEQUEL), greet their South African exchange student Mahree (Lindsey Haun, BRING IT ON), they're surprised to discover she's white. But no one's more surprised than Mahree herself, a product of the Apartheid system, who's been raised to view dark-skinned people as second-class citizens. Only if Piper and Mahree can learn to see past their differences will they discover the friendship of a lifetime.

Too many films about race relations and prejudice are either geared toward adults only or are so much about the past that they are too graphic and cannot be shown to children. This is not the case with The Color of Friendship. I am 43 years old and grew up in the south. I watch this movie over and over. The movie starts with both girls having preconceived ideas of what race the other should be based on the society and country that they live in. Early on they learn that they are wrong. This - along with so many other things - are lessons that adults too can learn from. This movie could easily be included as part of Black History Month - and it is actually shown on TV over and over during Black History Month - but could be included in media presentations at the local level if it were available on DVD. a must see

this movie is great , the first time i saw it my teacher showed in douring black history month...if you have a child between 4 and 14 and you are trying to teach them about racism this is a very good movie to show... i was very touched by this movie.... its really great February 6, 2008

Amazing!

Wow! I love this movie more each time I watch it. The premise is strong, a real issue unlike much of the Disney Channel 'fluff' on today, and it's carried out superbly. Tears always spring to my eyes near the end. March 17, 2007

Touching and Inspiring

I have now seen this movie about nine times, and it never seems to fail to touch me. It's an inspiring movie that highlights the issues with race relations that were prevalent in the 50's and 60's (and before), and it is filled with so much symbolism (such as Muhre's bird which Flora explains the uniqueness of at the end of the movie,etc.). It does it in a loving, innocent way that easily reaches children (and the children within us all).

The Color of Friendship

This movie was one of the best movies i ever saw. I think this movie should be played in schools around the US in the month of black history because it teaches kids to like both races black and white. Please watch this movie!!!!!!!!!!!!
