About Far From Home

On the other side of innocence lies fear. Drew Barrymore (Charlie's Angels, The Wedding Singer, Never Been Kissed), Anthony Rapp, (Adventures in Babysitting), Richard Masur (License to Drive) and Matt Frewer ("Max Headroom") star in this twisted suspense thriller as an innocent girl's budding sexuality lures her into a frenzied whirlwind of seduction and murder. Stranded in the desert with an empty gas tank, Charlie Cross (Frewer) and his beautiful young daughter Joleen (Barrymore) go to a nearby trailer park to escape the blistering noonday heat. It's there Joleen meets Jimmy, a strange and mysterious boy whose brazen and enticing sexuality captures her curiosity. But as a shy competitor vies for her attention, Joleen becomes embroiled in a deadly adult world where the price of sophistication is terror.

Returning from a vacation, a father who knows nothing has run out of gas somewhere in Nevada on the way back to L. A. Charlie Cox has his preteen daughter along who is about to have a birthday. A the Exxon, the manager says they are out of gas as there has been no delivery. They usually kill the stranded owners and take parts from the cars to resell. The father and daughter are deserted and stuck in a trailer part with typical occupants. "Everything is about money": the familiar Sixties complaint from an old flower child; they don't work so look down on money and those who make it legitimately. Personal commment: No wonder they were drug users.

Joleen, the preteen girl is dressed in a black bikini, with a figure like mine. She is exactly like Dolly Parton's "Joleen." On Chuck's birthday (also Joleen's twelveth), she was saved from Jimmy's rage by Pinky who is mean sometimes. Both teenaged boys were s. repressed and consequently killed their mothers, blaming them for this defect. It almost was fate my way, but Justin had a conscience. Pinky lost his computer lab in an abandoned warehouse up on the hill (looked like Simi Valley) to violence and disaster.

After a quiet twilight, there was an almost-full moon as they celebrate birthdays, to be followed by a vertigionous remote control toy truck, which caused chaos. Amy and her mother were doxies as a hobby. The scene reflected in sunglasses was effective. How is it t hat someone can be right and still so wrong, as the Norfolk Southern train crossed as they return home into the sunset. "I trusted you." Pinky stole and read her journal, playing keepaway, hide and seek frun, too. "Here I come," in a sandstorm, and "Come Out Wherever You Are.

A quirky unbelievable snuff movie. July 20, 2008

This movie does several things pretty well. First, Drew Barrymore's character is really well drawn. She's sensitive, consumed by her own emotions, and, well, horny. Unlike the teenagers in so much of today's cinema, Drew's character has a total lack of attitude, she's fueled by feelings, not cliches. This is all done in a subtle way, and that makes her very likable and sympathetic. Also, the "far from home" atmosphere is created nicely. You really do feel as if you're in the last place on earth, with all these oddball characters either trying to get out or else slowly losing their sanity from the isolation and desolation. These things contrast well and give the film a really uneasy feeling. The totally naive girls put in a dangerous place - but of course she doesn't know it's dangerous. It could so easily descend into melodrama, but it doesn't because of the skillfulness with which it is crafted. The other characters are also well done - everyone has a very definite personality and they all add together to create the atmosphere - exactly what you might expect to find in such a place, but of course you've never thought about it before because who would want to?

Overall, an effective film. April 21, 2004

I bought this movie 'cause I'm a big fan of Drew, luckily I liked it! Drew was such a good actress even then and she looked gorgeous! The movie is really exciting and the ending is very surprising. If you're a fan of Drew you'll definitely like it and if you're a fan of thrillers you'll like it as well! March 31, 2004

A very good movie, wrongly crucisfied by the critics. I was on the edge of my seat watching this film, and you could never tell what was going to happen. Drew Barrymore proved in this film she was going to be the great actress she turned out to be. April 5, 2002
