About Red Green, DVD*
Innovative handyman Red Green is proud to announce his first DVD, and while admitting that he doesn't understand the technology, he chooses to mark the occasion with a tribute to duct tape, that endlessly useful substance he terms "the handyman's secret weapon." In the course of the program, Green (ably portrayed by Canadian comedian Steve Smith) demonstrates projects that are one part Rube Goldberg and many parts duct tape. Some of the gags are elaborate and inspired, such as a bit about a pontoon boat you can make by stripping the heat ducts from your house ("don't forget to replace them before winter"), taping them all together, and adding an outboard motor as a finishing touch. The humor of all this is an acquired taste, and those who just don't get it would probably have to be duct taped to the television to watch Red Green. But if you enjoy this sort of offbeat humor, Duct Tape Virtuoso Deluxe is a treat. How else could you learn to make construction equipment from a stepladder and a Thigh-Master? Who else would teach you how to make a paddlewheel riverboat by taping together parts of a junked van? Only Red Green, who also thoughtfully provides tips on using all those empty duct-tape rolls to make holders for the many bottles in your "beer cellar." Bonus material on the DVD includes a trip to the actual largest duct-tape plant in the world (which Red proudly notes is "right here in Canada"), and a segment shot at a gathering of fanatical Red Green fans who show off their own duct-tape creations. --Robert J. Love to meet red green steve smith in person and express his excellent videos. gbreat pbs series and would buy more.
October 6, 2005My favorite segments from THE RED GREEN SHOW (do a Google!) have always been HANDYMAN'S CORNER, in which Red takes junk items from around the lot and converts them into a moneysaving project, always using rolls and rolls of "the handyman's secret weapon: Duct tape." DUCT TAPE VIRTUOSO DELUXE is a collection of more than a dozen of those segments, in which Red builds (among other things) a front loader from a Lincoln towncar; an Airstream camper from two rowboats; a pontoon boat from a recliner and HVAC ventilation; a drag racer from a lawn mower, a ladder, a broken chair, and a bike; and a stretch-SUV from... well, you get the idea.
RED GREEN is one of my favorite shows --I love the subtle, inventive humor-- and I've always wanted a collection of these segments. They're the ones I'd mention most often when I'd ask people "Have you ever seen THE RED GREEN SHOW?" and then I'd stumble trying to explain how funny it was when Red not only cobbled these projects together, but then actually made them WORK. Now, I can just show them the DVD.
A great collection that hasn't gotten any less funny with repeated viewing, and a great introduction to anyone who's ever wondered what this show is about. May 4, 2004
Once again, this Red Green tape is a one-hour collection of scenes from the excellent Red Green show. As might be expected, the majority of them are Handyman Corner skits, but they are quite excellent, and I only recognized a couple from other Red Green tapes. (Nearly all are new to me, as my local PBS station stopped carrying Red right after the last telethon - where they announced that they raised enough to continue showing it! Grrr!)
Anyway, the big surprise (to me) on this tape was no Harold! For the most part it's just red, but Mike Hamar is there, as is Dalton Humphrey, and a few others. Ever wonder what Red would do if he ran out of duct tape? Well, get this tape and you'll find out.
This is a great tape, with nothing that needs to be kept away from younger viewers. It is hilariously funny, and well worth the money. Buy it! August 17, 2001
The red green show is a PBS comedy show, about a lodge on opussum and the miss adventures of the members. The show is skit basses with a tie in plot inbetween. All in all its a good laugh on the obserdities of rural life and outdoor enjoyment.
