I can't think of another film quite like this one with its flawlessly realized POV of a boy at home during Britain's WWII. The acting is entirely excellent, the cinematography is grand, the use of music is just right, in other words, not saturating the film in sentimentality. It's both poignant and very funny in an wholly realistic way.

After I got the DVD I wasn't that excited about seeing it again, only vaguely remembering that it had rec'd terrific reviews. When I finally ran out of other things to see, saw it and loved it so much I turned around and watched it again.

Only quibble--would love to have had an audio commentary from the director, would have been fascinating as the film is somewhat autobiographical. July 5, 2008

It's amazing to see how people react to war and this is most certainly a classic to have. To view this through the eyes of everyday life in England during the war and how it was for them is a movie for keeps. January 4, 2008

British born blokes, like my ex-wife who experienced the Blitz, say this movie is just like it was. I wasn't there but can still feel and envy the era as I might have been. September 26, 2007
