About Over the Brooklyn Bridge

Alby Sherman is a man with a deli and a dream. He's looking to sell his greasy spoon in Brooklyn and buy a swanky Manhattan restaurant. His Uncle Benjamin will lend him the money, but only on the condition that Alby dump Elizabeth, his non-Jewish girlfriend, and marry one of the faith. Now Alby has to choose between his business and a dish who's definitely not on the menu.

This is a brilliant, very Jewish, very New Yorkish, comedy that should have been more widely admired than it was. It is now hard to find. Like Elliott Gould's earlier black comedy masterpiece Little Murders, Over the Brooklyn Bridge has marvelous acting, an often hilarious script, and deep insight into the worst and best parts of human nature. The engagement party dinner near the movie's close is unforgettable. Sid Caesar should have won an academy award for it. Shelly Winters and Carol Kane are fantastic throughout. Hemingway? Well, she won't be everyone's cup of tea. In any case, don't this splendid movie. Especially if you're from New York. Woody Allen should be so funny! February 15, 2007

This film might have been the swan song for it's main characters; Gould, Hemmingway, Winters and Sid Ceaser. Incedently, a wonderful performance by Burt Young. Perhaps casting could have come up with a more appropriate shixa than Margaux Hemingway. Carol kane's character is a little to "pushed", fault the screen writer.

O.K. the film is frantic and perhaps overplayed but certain individual scenes were wonderful. A former Brooklyn boy like me especially enjoyed the scenes around Coney Island and the family squabble, in the new restaurant, is a gem.

Don't recall this movie ever being distributed to the theaters, perhaps the potential distributors thought it to "ethnic' if you get my drift. May 18, 2001
