Peter Frampton
Brilliant Album
Listening again to this wonderful album all those years later I still get some goose bumps and some tough feelings and memories return, but I will always be grateful to Peter for this album, which I think is one of his best....showcasing his brilliant and underrated guitar playing, his great voice and his mature and sensitive lyrics.....I heard somewhere that Frampton when through some tough times and I think this album was the point that he picked himself up and tried to explore his feelings through his music....maybe this is why it struck such a chord with me...
Anyway folks I really recommend this album even if you are not feeling down.....it is definitely one of my all time favourites

Cleaned-Up Clapton with some Winwood and Bowie on the Side, and of course, Peter the Great
The compositions stay within Frampton's limitations so that he doesn't have to strain or overplay. In fact, he is a great blues guitarist, his sound much like that of Eric Clapton, but without any of Clapton's overplaying, where he trips all over himself trying to prove how good he is (was). Frampton sounds like Steve Winwood at times and some of the intensity of David Bowie is here. (Frampton toured with Bowie as lead guitarist on the Glass Spider venture in the late 80's).
My few criticisms are that some of the rock motifs sound too canned at times and, as I said before, some of the songs could have been improved or omitted because they're not up to snuff. Sometimes less is more and I think that applies here. Also, he could have employed more instruments for variety, like sax and piano. But, what a guitarist he is and his arrangements are superb in spots, as in one song where he switches from electric to acoustic guitar at the end. He has most of Clapton's depth and heart (without the clutter too), and, like Clapton, he can sing, though he's not as great a blues singer as Clapton.
Hey, why don't they do something together? July 21, 2006
