New Nightmare (1994)

English-professor-turned-horror-auteur Wes Craven brings both careers to play in this ingenious reinterpretation of the Nightmare on Elm Street series as a modern-day fairy tale--a sort of Hansel and Gretel for big kids. Heather Langenkamp, star of the original film, plays Heather Langenkamp, an actress and mother wracked with nightmares as Los Angeles is rocked with unexplained earthquakes. Meanwhile, her son starts sleepwalking and croaking Freddy Krueger threats. Is it a coincidence that Wes Craven (playing himself) is turning his own troubled dreams into a new screenplay, which he calls "a sort of nightmare in progress"? According to his visions, the imaginary Freddy has become the embodiment of ancient evil and is trying to break out of his movie prison and into the physical world. It's a rather literal and glib explanation, but words have never been Craven's strong suit. His central thesis, the cultural importance of stories, is more resonant in the web of imagery arising from dreams, movies, and the subconscious. Robert Englund and John Saxon play themselves and their movie characters (though this Freddy is decidedly less wisecracking and more demonic). It's a thoughtful, imaginative, and often gripping modern horror film that echoes with suggestions of The Exorcist and Poltergeist. Freddy Invades the Real World!!!

After The Final Nightmare, Wes Craven is having nightmares again, so he decides to write a new script. Beacuse the Nightmare films have ended, the 'real' Freddy decides to come to our world. Wes Craven, Heather Langenkamp, Robert Englund, John Saxon are some of Freddy's targets he tries to kill. He tries to get Heather's son, Dylan too. The real Freddy is a lot scarier and more evil than Robert Englund could ever portray! Heather decides to play Nancy one last time and kill Freddy...for good! If you love the Nightmare series, and a movie within a movie, you might like WES CRAVEN'S NEW NIGHTMARE!!! September 7, 2008

Where it All Comes Full Circle

Wes Craven's return to the ANEOS series is also where everything comes full circle. This film vindicated the past sequels (which were pretty good), and wrapped up the Nightmare films perfectly.

New Nightmare is a self-referential film that expands the Freddy myth while parodying itself. The self-referential perspective of the film adds to the horrific feeling it conveys.

Overall, New Nightmare is a great example of how to complete a franchise. It creates a larger story while wrapping everything up. May 25, 2008

new nightmare fanatic

the movie was very entertaining. i had already seen it when i was i little girl and just had to see it again. i felt like it was my very first time seeing it. everything was on point, the music, the mask, the makeup. this is the best freddy kruger movie that ive seen thus far. my favorite part was when he came out of dylans bed. i think it was mostly the music that made that part the most entertaining to me. i know this movie was made so long ago and there probably wont be a nightmare on elm street 8 but if the creator decides to make another one, ill be first in line to buy my ticket. Only a diehard Freddy fan could appreciate this

I have a hard time deciding which is the bigger waste of time. This or the previous two. New Nightmare had a very interesting story. But this movie suffered from two very big flaws. A very low body count and it was centered around that boy. I really didn't feel his character at all.

It was good seeing the Freddy character return to his very dark roots. The problem is his full appearance was too late in the movie. And he really didn't do anything special. Except a rehash scene from the first one. The pacing was too slow and the plot was up and downhill.

It's not scary and Freddy doesn't look nowhere near as scary as people sell it. If you made it this far in your life without Freddy. Continue to move on or just rent or borrow it. But the first 4 are the only ones really worth seeing.
