Prom Night IV: Deliver Us from Evil (1991)

A good slasher film

I enjoyed this slasher film. It seemed a notch above the others of this type, probably because of the direction and the actors were good. Care was taken to create a forboding suspence to it, and it had an underlying evilness to it. The actors were convincing in their fear.Highly reccomended August 31, 2005

much better than you'd expect

This film isn't flawless, but it's like 'Gone With the Wind' next to most slasher movies. There's not really anything new here, with the possible exception being the incineration of two victims on a pair of crosses.For whatever the reason, this film awoke a powerful sense of nostalgia within me.Maybe it was the female lead. She took me back to a time when gorgeous women got perms, too. I don't even remember her name, and I don't feel like walking over to the video box to look it up. But, whoever she was, I found her very appealing. It didn't hurt that she spent most of the time in a bright blue dress (my favorite color). She was worth the price of the video. The other girl is also quite appealing. Alas, the blonde enjoys sex and is disrespectful to the nun, so her time is automatically limited.(Does the (...) girl ever get a break in these sort of movies?)You'd think one would have to luck out and slip through the cracks every now and then.But not this time.
Strong points of Prom Night 4 extend beyond the girls. The pace is more natural than that of most slasher films. The action starts slowly and builds over the course of time. (Whether that is an asset or a liability is a matter of personal preference). It could have probably benefited from a couple of more killings, to be fair. I would also prefer that the villain wear a mask.(With everything else being so formulaic, why make an exception in this crucial area?) All in all, I think this is a good movie.It provides the things you'd expect in a film of this sort, and is strong in terms of intangibles. By 'intangibles' I mean:the girls, the atmosphere, and the gun. (That was a Colt Python, which was known in those days as the Cadillac of revolvers.) Nice job of completely disregarding parts 2 and 3 and making a chapter that can stand on its own. It will never be confused with Halloween. However, this is far superior to what I expected from a movie with a Roman Numeral 4 in the title. August 1, 2005

This must be the lowest-budget, ill-cast, sorriest excuse of a horror movie ever made. Hands down, that's it. July 28, 2003

Better than 2 and 3

So we know what to expect from the Prom Night series by now: cheap and nasty efforts. But this is a lot better than the stupid Prom Night 2 and 3. It's a pity they hadn't done this one before 2 and 3 because Jonas, the killer, is pretty cool and he actually has motives for his madness. If he'd have been in 2 then we would never have heard of Mary Lou (urgh) and this guy would be the star of the sequels. Am I asking for too much with a higher body count? Probably. But this is worth a look. Forget 2 and 3 and pretend they don't exist. Just get this one and the original. You won't be disappointed. March 25, 2000
