About Aftershock: Earthquake in New York
New York, the City That Never Sleeps, is trapped in a nightmare of horror and destruction when a massive earthquake rocks the unsuspecting city. Countless lives are lost, families are torn apart, and chaos runs rampant as the Mayor (Charles S. Dutton) and former Fire Chief (Tom Skerritt) race to enact a city-wide emergency plan. The two men also face personal devastation and uncertainty as their own family members lie buried in the toppled infrastructure. Sharon Lawrence, Lisa Nicole Carson and Cicely Tyson also star in this incredible story of undying courage in the face of unimaginable human tragedy.

Okay, to be honest, the film's a bit of a snoozer. The acting is pretty much on par for these type of films, with the Russian taxi driver's accent particularly amusing. The special effects are mediocre and mostly limited to the first half. The second half is devoted to various uninteresting characters getting rescued or in the process of dying. Again, boring and nothing you haven't seen before or better, although the ridiculousness of Sharon Lawrence's character pseudo-rock climbing her way up a ruined school building to retrieve her son was unintentionally hilarious. This did not need to be a three-hour event, and when it's over your only emotion is relief that it wasn't any longer.
August 31, 2008I love disaster flicks and this one did not disappoint. It had all the qualities I love about such movies: the person/people who puts money/ego ahead of people's safety dies, the hero gets the girl, and the hero goes back into the disaster area when everyone else is leaving.
March 1, 2008Just ok. They do not make disaster movies like they use to. The plot is great, ideas are great, but acting is terrible and scenes are terrible espeically during the earthquakes...

Who would've ever thought that there could ever be an earthquake of this magnitude in New York City. Great Cast.....Great Special Effects. It leaves the viewer with the feeling that people really do care about one another, especially in times of crises. If you like disaster movies, this one is a must have for your collection.
June 27, 2007Nice panoramic CG scenes of a wrecked Manhattan, huge pieces of buildings crushing hapless people in the streets, even a full blown tsunami taking out poor Liberty, Aftershock gives us generous mayhem. Some of the "human stories" are contrived and overdone, especially the climbing mom and mean accountant. But it is still a fun ride, nicely adorned by the lovely Jennifer Garner. A definite keeper.
