Corrina, Corrina (1994)

Ray Liotta plays a 1950s jingle composer whose wife dies, leaving him to raise their grieving young daughter (Tina Majorino) alone. Dad hires an African-American housekeeper (Whoopi Goldberg), who helps fill the gap in the child's life--and then Dad's life--and soon an interracial relationship crossing the social mores of the era is underway. Written and directed by Jessie Nelson, the film is a spot-on recreation of '50s suburbia without gratuitous kitsch. Liotta is perfect as a working man of the day, given to white shirts and narrow ties; Goldberg gives one of her finest performances as the levelheaded Corrina; and little Majorino is heartbreakingly effective. But the film entirely bears the stamp of one person, and that's Nelson, who has a wonderfully witty eye and a sophisticated but sensitive approach to the crosscurrents of emotion at play in this story. --Tom Keogh Amazon.com essential video

One of the best films ever made.

Corrina, Corrina is a brave movie, exploring a topic that few dare to touch. It would be all too easy for Corrina to be the comedian who makes everyone cheer up just to disappear into the background, as many African-American "maid" characters end up doing. Instead, she becomes the love interest, the ultimate female character, who has her own dreams, problems, complexities, and validity. I have loved this movie since I was a child, and recently watched it again to find that I still love it. It is extremely well-written, clever, and sad--yet hysterical, and it challenges all stereotypes, racial, temporal, and sexual, in a way that is extremely rare. Everyone should see it. Whoopi will touch your sole

I don't claim to understand how that brilliant mind of Whoopi Goldberg works, but I can assure you it will make you question everything you hold dear. For example, I used to think that Whoopi was a bit of a so-and-so which was confirmed to me when I was at an ALS benefit and met Ted Danson's dry cleaner. He told me that Danson was never really involved with Whoopi because that would violate his religion, but he just used it to promote his screwball comedy "A Fine Mess." I doubt it, as they seemed very much in love. You can usually see it in the body language. Anyway, I love Martin Short, but not Dana Carvey. July 20, 2007

Tragically Unknown!

It is so sad that very few people have even heard of this movie! It is so charming, heartbreaking and beautiful.
I rented the movie and after watching it I immediately got on Amazon and bought it. It is such an honest and solid movie, it's hard not to like it.
I can't imagine that you won't enjoy at least some aspect of this movie.
It's worth watching. It will soon become a favorite. I promise. June 27, 2007
