One of my all-time favorite films, one of the very few I can watch again and again. Hilarious, but dead-pan. Yes, The Blues Brothers is on the same list. You'll love it or hate it. America as a Finn might see it - hot cars, hot music, ethnic diversity, shabbiness... April 6, 2008

I can tell from some of the other reviews that one really needs a better understanding of Finnish culture to appreciate this movie. Though Finns are a little more cosmopolitan now then they used to be thanks to successes like those of NOKIA etc., this movie is right on target in terms of how a lot of Finns might have been about 10 ears ago. Also it looks at how the US was and might have been interpreted by your average Finn at that time. I love Finland, and this movie.

It's probably not for everyone though. July 31, 2005

This movie was hilarious, it's so ridiculous and well written. It reminds me a bit of The Blues Brothers. There isn't much dialogue throughout the movie, but the actions and visuals more then make up for it. One of the things that needs to be understood before watching the movie is that The Leningrad Cowboys are an actual band, they're not made up like The Blues Brothers, which makes it a little funnier. I highly recommend this movie to people who are fans of weird music and foreign films. It's a fun movie to watch and is only 80 minutes, so give it a try! April 17, 2005

This is the best road picture ever made and the funniest movie I have ever seen. Period. It's about the worst R&R band in the world--a bunch of Russian musicians from the Steppes who try to make it big in the US. So screamingly funny I have seen grown adults helpless with laughter, unable to breathe with tears rolling down their faces.
The timing in this movie is so good it makes Bob Hope and Jack Benny look like amateurs. The jokes are understated (which make them even funnier) and the heart is in exactly the right place. Scene: Two Finnish musicians sitting on a rooftop somewhere in NYC: Says one: "You *always* get murdered when you go to New York." Long pause as he takes a drag from a cigarette--"I seen it on telewision."
Okay, another scene: Skeptical producer to the group's manager: "If they're so good, how come I never heard of em?"
Manager: "Umm--they've been touring in Norway for years--yes."
Warning however: it requires a particular humor circuit. If you think throwing a concert in Helsinki Square backed by the Red Army Chorus (the real one!) singing American R&R songs like "Happy Together" is funny--(an event that actually took place in the early nineties) then you'll like this movie. Forewarned: buy two copies of the video because one will wear out or be stolen by envious friends.

This film was an excellent portrayal of the Russian's battle with America during the Cold War, not to mention the witty comedy. It was certainly the director's best work. Stupendous! September 20, 2003
