This Is the Army (1943)

Great score! Awful sound quality!

This is a disappointing unauthorized movie "soundtrack" CD for Irving Berlin's THIS IS THE ARMY, released by Warner Bros. in 1943. Most, if not all, the selections appear to be lifted (poorly) right off a release print of the movie. The sound is often noisy and unintelligible. There are bits of dialog along with sound effects which interfere with the music. Too bad better source materials could not be located to prepare an official CD.

One plus: this CD contains the complete song THE ARMY'S MADE A MAN OUT OF ME which, was apparently cut from most or all prints following initial release. Where did the CD producers obtain this song? It must have come off a print as it is preceded and ends with audience applause as do the other selections on this CD. The cut song is not included in the recent Warner Home Video re-mastered DVD. However, you can see a glimpse of it in the trailer.

This is an excellent, memorable Berlin score with Oscar winning (deserved) Ray Heindorf musical supervision, which would easily rate 5 stars with a first rate presentation, unfortunately not given here. December 23, 2008

fun movie with old actors

Red, White, and Blue

How much more Red, White and Blue can you get then this tribute to America during WW2. The songs are great, the acting excellent, and the story just makes you want to cheer for Uncle Sams boys! Of course the use of Joe Lewis was odd...but then he was a big name and national hero. This has been a favorite of mine since the 1960's when I saw it on TV. A must for any movie collector. March 25, 2008

Poor quality recording

The movie itself is enjoyable but the picture and sound quality is less than desirable. It also has tracking problems. I tried it on two different machines and it wouldn't track out completely on either one.

The lack of desirable picture and sound quality, as well as the tracking problems, are probably due to it having been copied at the EP speed instead of the SP speed as it should have been.
I am very upset about the condition of this recording and I wouldn't buy another recording, tape or disk, put out by this particular company. February 23, 2008

If you like old movies like I do. You'll like this one. Great stars and somewhat of a muscial. Joan Leslie has always been my favorite October 10, 2007
