About Oscar Peterson Trio - Night Train

This 1962 recording represents Oscar Peterson at his most commercially accommodating, yet his trio with Ray Brown and Ed Thigpen never fails to swing. The program includes such familiar melodies as the title track (which began life as Duke Ellington's "Happy Go Lucky Local"), "Georgia on My Mind," and "The Honeydripper." With the notable exception of the gospel-like original "Hymn to Freedom," most of the tracks clock in at around three minutes. This reissue contains several alternate takes that were wisely left off the original LP, including such unlikely jazz vehicles as "Volare" and "My Heart Belongs to Daddy." --Rick Mitchell Amazon.com essential recording

I was virtually unfamiliar with Oscar Peterson until Amazon made this album their MP3 Daily Deal. After hearing the clips, I had to buy it! Not since Art Tatum, have I heard a jazz pianist with such original movement and phrasing.

At times, he is almost minimalistic, playing a single note ("Duke's Place" melody on "C-Jam Blues"), then he jumps into some virtuosic rifts that will blow the mind of anyone who understands what he's doing.

The swing on every track is so natural and beautiful, that you almost forget that it's "irregular". The song selection is great. I adore this album! August 31, 2008

One of the greatest trios in jazz history. Their improvisations are almost unbelievable. It blows me away every time I play it and that is often. June 14, 2008

Oscar simply was the best jazz pianist I had the pleasure of hearing and meeting. Thank goodness these recordings will last forever so generations of new born jazz fans will be able to enjoy the master of the piano. Simply the best! Gary Farr, Sky.fm radio host Solo Piano Channel June 12, 2008
