About Out Of Africa: Music From The Motion Picture Soundtrack

The great irony of John Barry's Academy Award-winning score for Out of Africa (which also took the Oscar as Best Picture) is that it almost never was; director Sydney Pollack had originally envisioned the film with native African music, going as far as laying the indigenous score down as he was editing. But the weight of John Barry's arguments--not to mention his considerable track record and composing gifts--held sway, and the composer delivered on his intent: a lush, romantic masterpiece for the ages. --Jerry McCulley Amazon.com essential recording

I was lucky enough to actually safari in Africa in the late 80's. With this CD I can close my eyes and remember the wonderful journey. Of course the movie provided visual benefits as well. August 8, 2008

This has to be one of my very favorite musical scores of all time. I play the CD at least once a week and it never fails to lift me to a "higher place". The score is enchanting and soothing. I would highly recommend it to everyone. March 26, 2008

Worth seeing again for so many visual and emotional rewards, not the least being Streep's maticulous performance, a masterful blending of three books into a coherent whole. However the commentary provided by producer/director Sydney Polack provides so much background detail that it lifts so many of this film's riches. The production details, the performances by Streep and Redford make this a cinematic event deserving its eight Oscars. With the commentary this ought to be a must on a winter's night to be warmed by your fire, marshmallows, cognac and to be taken to Africa. March 26, 2008
