About Emmylou Harris - Cowgirl's Prayer

Emmylou Harris has aged more gracefully than any other country artist (with the exception of Willie Nelson). 1993's Cowgirl's Prayer showcases this maturity in a collection of songs that share wisdom, offer forgiveness, make amends, and explore spirituality. As always, Harris's voice is angelic and sad, her phrasing languid and lonesome. Lucinda Williams's "Crescent City" glows with tragic barroom neon while the classic "You Don't Know Me" takes on a deeper meaning, as if sung perhaps to an old friend or a lost relative? And while spoken-word delivery often falls flat, "Jerusalem Tomorrow" tells such a compelling story--and Harris's delivery is so knowing--that it haunts you long after it's over. --Alexandra Russell Amazon.com

I think that this album is quite smooth and great but unfortunately it is too relaxing. Emmylou has a great voice and this is a good album but something of Emmylou's power is missing which she had in 70's. Sure, the fans will love many of the songs, such as "The Light" and "A Ways to Go". I really like this album but it has some fillers..."You Don't Know Me" and "I Hear a Call". "Jerusalem Tomorrow" is quite dizzy but somehow I like it. "High Powered Love" is one of my favorites in this album, it's quite a powerful song. Emmylou was still making good country music in 90's. After that, she had a great success with "Wrecking Ball" which was quite different but good.

While I had always known of Emmylou Harris, it wasn't until this album came out that my fascination with her began. At the time I was working in Downtown Baltimore and remember distinctly hearing Thanks to You on the radio and just loving it. And then many years later, after becoming reintrocued to Emmylou by buying Red Dirt Girl, I began collecting her entire catalog, and Cowgirl's Prayer is among my favorites. Crescent City is easily in my top 5 Emmylou songs of all time. March 18, 2008

I read some of the other reviews of this album. They hit the spiritual aspects of this album wonderfully. The Light, Jerusalem Tomorrow, I Hear a Call...all are more than just beautiful songs expertly sung. They are messages to be taken into the soul.

But every review I've read here has neglected to tell you about 'High Powered Love'. It's a song about love AND sex. And it's witty and Emmylou's singing brings carnal thoughts to my mind every time I hear it.

Buy the album. Feed your soul with it....and your libido, too.

This C.D. is a relaxing experience. Emmylou's beautiful vocals and the well written words make this C.D. one of the best in my collection. I have never owned any of her music until now. I have no regrets in my purchase. A "Cowgirls Prayer" is one of the most hauntingly beautiful songs I have ever heard. Definately a must for the horse lover! September 13, 2007

I have no disagreements with the previous reviews. As an alternative however, (and I apologize if this is redundant), I'd suggest you give a listen to Jennifer Warne's version of "Ballad of the Runaway Horse" on Rob Wasserman's "Duets" disc. It simply doesn't get any beter. August 6, 2007
