I came of age in the early 60's, a time when a variety of forms of folk music was quite popular. I first heard of Dave Van Ronk in an early Dylan song and always meant to check him out. Forty plus year later I got my first Van Ronk album. Last night on a long drive I played Inside Dave Van Ronk at high volume and absolutely loved it. He sings with great passion. What a treat. I'll be buying more Van Ronk!
October 26, 2007R.I.P. Dave Van Ronk....I wish I could put the finest flowers on your grave.
I don't think he ever received the credit that he deserved. His folk guitar is clean and brilliant. I love his cotton-picking style...in fact, I used to listen to many of these songs on this CD back in the 60's when this came out on an album-especially "Come Back Baby" and "You've Been A Good Old Wagon" and got to learn how to play them note for note on my guitar like he did. This CD brought tears to my eyes and fond memories of the 60's hippie days when folk music was in its hey-day. I also must give praise to his unique, husky, gritty voice....he just rocks.

Less polished than the tunes presented on Folkways Years CD, this CD contains many of the pieces that Dave became known for performing during his early years in the 'Village' in New York. A combination of old sea shanties, mountain music and a few newer 20's-styled blues songs with Dave showcasing some of his early skills on the 6 and 12 string guitars, the autoharp, banjo and even the dulcimer. A critical piece of Dave's musical history and legacy. It is no wonder that his most well read biography is titled, "The Mayor of MacDougal Stree"... for, indeed, he must have been!

Here is a real down to earth original from the heart blues acoustic guitar singer with the most authentic approach. Highly recommended. Will remind you of all the folkways that came and went in the days when a man expressed himself with an acoustic guitar, a bottle of beer, and a gut wrenched by life. Highly original great acoustic blues listening cd.

In 1970 I found an LP of Dave Van Ronk and the Hudson Dusters in the 69 cents bin in a precursor to K-Mart. This was a great LP and had the version of Cocaine Blues that was being played on the local university radio station. I bought this CD thinking that it had the same version but it did not. This CD is OK Van Ronk but I'm still looking for the Hudson Dusters.
