| | Saw this when I was 15 changed my perspective on relationships | |
I can't begin to tell you how this movie affected me when I saw it. Being an adolescent when I saw this made me believe that that was what true love really was about. The music to this day sends chills through me. I think one of the other reviewers summed up all the psychological nuances in the film. I decided at that time I did not want my life to end up like, Brubaker or his wife's. I saw the film for love. When He made it on the plane it was like yes this is how life should be! I loved the show, loved the music. Catherine was my very first crush and I would follow her anywhere. I have tried to live my life like I belive Brubaker and Catherine did after they landed in Paris. Its a great period movie but it says so much that is still applicable to life in the 21st century. Some things never change. Life is short follow your heart.

I remember seeing this film on TV late one night. I was captivated. This is the film that made Jack Lemmon one of my all-time favorite actors. And Catherine Deneuve...just beautiful. This is one great, funny romantic film. The All-Star Cast is hilarious! Jack Weston and Harvey Korman almost steal the movie! The April Fools is a wonderful film. One of my few all time favorites. It is a shame and a crime that this movie isn't on DVD. Heck, I'll go one further: I don't own a Blue Ray player, but if this film ever made it on this format, I would buy a player just to get this film. It deserves better than a discontinued VHS format. I've since carefully converted it to an iPod/Apple TV friendly format since I tend to watch this film over and over but I still would like to see it on DVD.
All I can say is the critics who bashed this film when it came out just do not get it! I'm shocked that it isn't even on Turner Classic Movies. That is a darn shame. Buy this movie if you can, even on video tape. It is truly worth owning!
September 29, 2008I LOVE this film. Everyting about it is pure delight and magic. It is the perfect bookend for/to Breakfast at Tiffany's. Brillant casting, wonderful direction, visually outstanding and just beautiful to watch. Just watch The opening party scene and you to will be hooked. Tiffany's opening shot does/did the same thing. I have an old VHS copy that is plain worn. When will this film be released on DVD???? The wait is killing me. Please release this GEM, please...
December 19, 2007I first saw this movie as a late night rerun just a few years ago. I was immediately captivated by Catherine Deneuve in the same manner as the character played by Jack Lemmon. I began to feel as if I were living that fantasy through Lemmon--every sad or happy emotion, especially love. I cared about what happened in the movie as if it were my own life experience. The fact that the story and lines might be cliche or saccharin mattered not to me. I was completely swept up in the relationship between Deneuve and Lemmon. It is taking forever for a DVD version to be released. What gives? VHS copies are scarcer than hens' teeth. This is my all time favorite love story.
July 20, 2007Read an interview of Wallace Shawn (the humunkulus from Woody Allen's Manhattan) recently where he said "it doesn't interest me unless it affects me". That simple statement struck me as the perfect way to estimate the significance of a performance or event or film, as in this case. The April Fools affected me. Just 16, Summer, out of town and by myself in a small-town theater in the afternoon. I remember it like it was last week.
Now, I'm a guy and emotions and "feelings" (uck!) sometimes seem, well.... stupid. But The April Fools makes me believe in love and the softer side. Not that I'm trading in my football and control of the remote that my wife allows me, but The April Fools points me in the direction of what's really good in life.
Highly recommended.
(Can't figure out what obstacle is so great that this Jack Lemmon, Catherine Deneuve, Peter Lawford, Harvey Korman classic is still not out on DVD. Does someone just not get it?)
