Burn the Floor (2000)

Great dancing ruined by gimmick and glitz...

The dancing or dancers are by no means 2 stars! They are very talented dancers, but the "visionary", if you want to call him or her that, did not do the dancing or dancers justice. I think they were going for an innovative approach that just came off as flashy and gimmicky. The costumes, lighting, and make-up detracts from the dancers and over-all just doesn't flatter them. I mean, they dancers wore metallic jeans and combat boots with black lipstick and eye make-up during a samba and for their paso doble the men wore metal shin guards while a women danced around in a huge head-piece. All this really took away from the dancing, the dancers looked so made up at times that I didn't even bother to look at the dancing. I know that the show was trying to be bold, new, and daring and I don't blame them, it was 1999 and everyone and everything back then was trying to be new, daring and futuristic. It might of worked back then, but now it's just cheesy and cheap. The sequel to this is so much better. August 6, 2008

Dance Crazy

I bought this DVD thinking that it was a story with dancing in it. But it isn't I should have read more carefully. It is an entire DVD of people dancing on stage. Good dancing but long scenes. July 7, 2008

Forget Dancing WIth The Stars!!!

THis is much sexier. I had the VHS tape and was so happy when it finally came out on DVD. This gives the background information about the dancers and how they came to be on Burn The Floor. It also lets the dancers talk about dancing and costumes and how they tried to merge their various styles of dancing. If you aren't wanting to stamp your own feet and swing with the dancers by the end of the DVD, you must be dead. March 25, 2007

Huge Disappointment

Having read the reviews on Amazon and other sites, I thought I'd give this DVD a shot. The premise of updating ballroom dance is an exciting one, and "Burn the Floor" had a lot of potential. The "making of" feature was informative and entertaining, and I enjoyed (for the most part) the interviews with the dancers. I appreciated the reminder of just how much time and training goes into a performance that only looks effortless. The different themes presented an interesting evolution from classic ballroom to modern dance fusion.

However, the costumes crossed the line from sexy to slutty (pretty shocking, considering one of the couples are brother and sister and had better be best buddies to dance with the risk of wardrobe malfunctions). The camera cuts were too fast to focus on the dancing, and frankly caused a headache. I would have liked to have seen full shots of the dancers rather than head and torso shots that cut off the feet. It seemed that when the editors needed footage, they chose ..."Let's see... feet? No! Crotch shot, or maybe buttocks! Forget about a shot of the dancers' legs... What do think this is, a DANCE show?!!!"

I've nothing against exciting, sensual dance, but let's see the performance, not an epileptically edited T&A flick. January 8, 2007
