| A ripp off that pays off... |
The creepy and dark, sometimes too dark cinematography is being cut up in a manic editing, and in stead of long silent camera poses, this movie uses seemingly uncontrolable handheld camera movements; and effectively so.
And so a sinister, dark world is being imposed on all of us, and in it are two cops: The anoyed-by-anything Christopher Lambert, walking around with a troubled mind, and Leland Orser (talk about references to "Se7en"!) as his wise-cracking side kick. And of course there is the deranged but highly intelligent serial killer who leaves clues to find and a Message with a capitel M to ponder on.
And yes, there is the sub-plot explaining why our main protagonist has become a quiet loner, there is the race against about every clock you can spot, there are the necessary twists-in-the-tale and the obligate stinger at the end - The Revelation Of The Reason For All This Misery That Has Cometh Upon Us for a mere 1 ½ hour.
If you take it all too seriously, you will be left behind disappointed and robbed of your money. But if you menage to go along with the ride and be prepared to share the enthusiasm the makers so obviously had in making this delicious pulp gourmet, you will have something to chew on.
But be warned: what you will be chewing on has an horrible decaying smell to it, and it only gets worse after that...
